For the past year I have been working as part of a University of Florida/ USGS research lab studying Invasive Burmese Pythons in South Florida. The project aims to shed insight into the behavior, survivorship, breeding patterns, and habitat use of these large reptiles in and around Big Cypress National Preserve and Everglades National Park. These cryptic animals are poorly understood, therefore the tracking (via radio telemetry), capture, and morphometric sampling of pythons is a routine and crucial part of my daily duties. Better understanding of the general ecology of Burmese pythons will hopefully lead to more effective management of the species. When we are not tracking snakes we are sometimes called upon by NPS staff to assist with sick or injured wildlife and various other wildlife related projects around the preserve.
