Who did you conduct research with?
GH Cook with Dr. Lena Struwe

What kind of research did you conduct and why?
Surveyed NJ State Parks for three genera of carnivorous plants (Utricularia, Drosera, and Sarracenia) and collected herbarium specimens. This is an independent honors research thesis to determine the distribution of species in this genera, as well as comparing to historical distribution using herbarium specimens. In addition, an illustrated key will be made and distributed for the Drosera genus to help State Park staff and visitors identify plants they encounter!

What tasks did you perform as part of the research?
Applied for NJDEP permits to collect plants, pressed and pickled specimens, took measurements and identified in the field. I also did microscopy on the Utricularia and took pictures (one included) to find key features like glandular hairs to use for ID.

What was your favorite aspect of the research you conducted?
Being able to be outside in the field and seeing beautiful pine barrens habitats with some of my favorite carnivorous plants present! As well as doing field excursions with pookie April :)
